Chennai, May 18: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay made a significant decision on Monday. He has directed the renovation and modernization of Amma Unavagam (Amma Canteens) across the state. This initiative is seen as a major step towards providing affordable, accessible, and quality food to the public.
Currently, there are 383 Amma Canteens operating under the Greater Chennai Corporation, along with 237 canteens in other municipalities and corporations. Recently, it was brought to the Chief Minister’s attention that the quality and taste of the 20,000 types of food served in these canteens were unsatisfactory. In response, he has instructed the relevant government department secretaries to upgrade the necessary infrastructure, procure kitchen equipment promptly, and ensure the continuous availability of delicious and quality meals to the public.
The Chief Minister also mandated that the costs for this renovation and material procurement be covered by the general funds of the municipalities and corporations.
For context, the Amma Canteens were initially launched by former Chief Minister Jayalalitha to provide affordable meals to the underprivileged.
In addition, preparations for reopening schools after the summer break have emerged as a priority for the Tamil Nadu government. Chief Minister Vijay held crucial consultations with Education Minister Rajmohan and senior officials at the Chennai Secretariat.
Schools are set to reopen soon, and the results of the 10th-grade examinations will also be announced in the coming days. The Chief Minister reviewed the preparations and discussed the operations of the school education department.
Officials also deliberated on programs and initiatives to be implemented in the education sector in the upcoming months. These discussions took place as Vijay initiated administrative meetings with ministers following his government formation.
Vijay’s party, the TVK, received a decisive mandate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, leading to his assumption of the Chief Minister’s role. Alongside him, nine ministers were sworn in, and their portfolios were recently allocated.
