Chennai, June 22: Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran criticized the state government led by the DMK for distributing biscuits instead of nutritious meals to students under the ‘Government Breakfast Scheme’ at a primary school in Thoothukudi district.
In a statement, Nagendran claimed that this incident reflects the government’s failure to effectively implement the welfare scheme aimed at addressing hunger among school children and improving educational outcomes.
This criticism follows reports that approximately 40 students at a primary school in Vilathikulam, Thoothukudi district, received packets of biscuits because the school was unable to provide regular breakfast as part of the scheme.
Questioning the government’s negligence in managing the program, the BJP leader emphasized that the breakfast scheme was originally designed to enable economically disadvantaged children to attend school without studying on an empty stomach.
Nagendran stated that the government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has also failed to properly implement this welfare initiative.
He dismissed claims that a sudden increase in the number of students benefiting from the scheme led to food shortages. According to him, officials should have anticipated and resolved such logistical issues in advance.
He argued that if there has been an increase in student enrollment, the government should have planned accordingly and ensured adequate food availability. The shortcomings of the scheme regarding the welfare of school children cannot be excused.
Nagendran urged the state government to investigate the incident and take immediate corrective measures to prevent such occurrences in Tamil Nadu schools in the future.
The breakfast scheme aims to provide nutritious morning meals to students in government schools, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. This program has been widely promoted as a measure to increase attendance, reduce hunger in classrooms, and enhance learning outcomes.
