T20 World Cup: Gautam Gambhirs Master Stroke Becomes a Boon for Team India

New Delhi, March 9: Team India has claimed the T20 World Cup title for the third time in history. In a thrilling final at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, the Indian team showcased an outstanding performance, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs. Head coach Gautam Gambhir’s ‘master stroke’ proved to be a blessing for the team.

Before the T20 World Cup 2026, Sanju Samson was struggling with poor form. In the T20 series against South Africa, he had the opportunity to open in just one match, scoring 37 runs off 22 balls. His place in the T20 squad seemed uncertain, and his form was not supporting him. Nevertheless, Gambhir included him in the World Cup squad.

Just before the World Cup, Sanju’s bat remained silent in a five-match T20 series against New Zealand, where he managed only 46 runs across five games. In the initial matches of the World Cup, Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma opened the innings, but Abhishek failed to score in three group stage matches. The opening pair was struggling.

During the Super-8 round, the Indian team made changes to the playing XI against Zimbabwe, giving Sanju Samson his first chance to play in the T20 World Cup 2026. He scored 24 runs off 15 balls, displaying the confidence that both he and the team needed.

Against the West Indies, coach Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav backed Sanju once again, sending him out as an opener. In a must-win match, Sanju lived up to the trust placed in him, scoring a remarkable 97 runs off 50 balls while holding one end steady despite wickets falling at the other.

In the semi-final against England, Sanju’s bat shone again as he scored 89 runs off 42 balls, helping India reach a total of 253 runs. With two strong performances in a row, he proved why Gambhir and the team management had faith in him.

However, the biggest stage awaited his best performance. Sanju seemed to save his finest innings for the T20 World Cup 2026 final. Against New Zealand, he played a brilliant knock, scoring 89 runs off 46 balls, making the title match one-sided.

Sanju Samson was named Player of the Tournament. His success, along with that of the Indian team, was significantly influenced by coach Gambhir. Despite continuous underwhelming performances, Gambhir backed Sanju and utilized him perfectly during the T20 World Cup 2026, benefiting the Indian team immensely.
