New Delhi, May 24: Swati Maliwal, a Rajya Sabha MP and former chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, launched a scathing attack on the Punjab government regarding the state of law and order. She accused the administration of failing to control the rising crime rates.
Maliwal took to the social media platform X to assert that law and order in Punjab has completely collapsed. She emphasized that the state government has failed to maintain control over its prisons, while crime on the streets continues to escalate.
She stated, “Prisoners in Punjab’s jails are spreading chaos, damaging property, and setting fires. It seems they all have mobile phones in their hands.”
Maliwal highlighted a recent incident in which a Punjab police assistant sub-inspector was shot dead in broad daylight while on duty in Amritsar. The assailants, riding motorcycles, fled the scene after firing at ASI Joga Singh.
She further alleged that crime in Punjab is on the rise, with prisoners operating beyond the control of authorities. “Crime is continuously increasing in Punjab. The number of prisoners is out of control, and the Chief Minister has surrendered to Arvind Kejriwal, abandoning his responsibilities. This is shameful,” she remarked.
These comments come amid a political controversy surrounding the state of law and order in Punjab, with opposition leaders accusing the Aam Aadmi Party government of failing to ensure security and manage prison affairs.
In recent months, there have been repeated political tussles in Punjab over law and order, with opposition parties expressing concerns about incidents of violence and the functioning of reform homes in the state.
