Kolkata, May 8: Suvendu Adhikari, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), met with Governor R.N. Ravi at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on Friday. During this meeting, Adhikari presented his claim to form the government. He was accompanied by prominent leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee, and Tapas Roy.
With Suvendu Adhikari being elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party, speculation regarding the chief ministerial candidate in West Bengal has come to an end. His name has been confirmed for the chief minister position. The decision was made during a legislative party meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Thus, it is now certain that Suvendu Adhikari will become the new chief minister of Bengal.
Adhikari is considered the strongest candidate for the chief minister role after defeating Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee by 15,000 votes in the hotly contested Bhawanipur constituency. According to the BJP, Suvendu is set to take the oath of office as West Bengal’s next chief minister on May 9, coinciding with the historic Rabindra Jayanti celebrations at Brigade Parade Ground.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has officially become the former chief minister of West Bengal. This change occurred when Governor R.N. Ravi announced the dissolution of the state assembly, which also means that the previous cabinet led by Banerjee has automatically ceased to exist.
Following the election results, Mamata Banerjee stated in a press conference on May 5 that she would not follow the tradition of submitting her resignation to the governor, as she believed the official results did not reflect the true public sentiment. This declaration made it clear that she was not accepting the defeat of the Trinamool Congress across West Bengal, nor her personal loss in the Bhawanipur constituency.
