Raipur, January 23 β India secured a seven-wicket victory against New Zealand in the second T20 match of the series. Following the win, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that he was initially upset when Ishan Kishan did not give him the strike during the powerplay but later understood the circumstances.
Speaking after the match, Suryakumar said, “I donβt know what Ishan ate at lunch, but I have never seen anyone reach around 60 runs by the end of the powerplay with two wickets down and just six runs on the board. We want our batsmen to play freely. During the powerplay, Ishan was not giving me the strike, and I was a little upset about that, but I later understood the situation.”
In this game, Suryakumar played an unbeaten innings of 82 runs off 37 balls, hitting 4 sixes and 9 fours. He forged an unbroken partnership of 122 runs with Ishan Kishan and another strong stand of 81 runs with Shivam Dubey.
On his excellent form, Suryakumar added, “I was batting well in the nets, got a good break, and had a solid practice session before the match. Our bowlers also put in tremendous effort. When New Zealand was 110 for 2, I thought the score might reach around 230, but our bowlers took responsibility and contributed. I am thoroughly enjoying what is happening right now. The camp atmosphere is very positive, and I want it to stay that way.”
Meanwhile, after trailing 0-2 in the five-match T20 series, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner commented, “Maybe scoring 300 runs against Team India is the right target? When you play against a team with such batting depth, and India started with intent from the very first ball, it was important for us to keep them under pressure wherever possible. Today, we were put under a lot of pressure, but this is a good learning opportunity and a chance to bounce back.”
Santner scored an unbeaten 47 runs off 27 balls, including 1 six and 6 fours. Reflecting on his batting, he said, “The wicket was very good, and the outfield was fast. I enjoyed playing here.”
In bowling, Santner delivered 2 overs, conceding 27 runs without taking a wicket. He explained, “There was dew here. As a spinner, I was just trying to hold the ball, which can be challenging, but you have to move forward.”
