Surya Kumar Yadav Sets Ambitious Goals After T20 World Cup Victory

Ahmedabad, March 9: Surya Kumar Yadav has made history. He has become the third Indian captain, following MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, to lead the team to a T20 World Cup victory. The Indian team clinched the title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Following this triumph, Yadav has outlined his next two ambitious goals.

At 35 years old, there were speculations about Yadav’s retirement after the World Cup. However, during a post-match media interaction, he dismissed these rumors and clarified his future objectives.

“My next goal is to win the Olympic gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Additionally, we need to defend our T20 World Cup title that same year. Don’t forget that,” Yadav stated.

His remarks made it clear that he intends to remain active in the sport for at least the next two years.

Yadav was appointed captain for the T20 format after the 2024 World Cup, with the aim of defending the title in 2026 on home soil, a goal he successfully achieved. He has become one of the most successful captains among ICC full member nations, leading the team in 52 T20 matches, winning 42, losing 8, and having 2 matches with no result. His winning percentage stands at an impressive 80.77%, placing him ahead of Rohit Sharma.

In the opening match of the T20 World Cup 2026, Yadav scored an unbeaten 84 runs against the USA, helping secure a victory for India. Although he may not have played major innings in subsequent matches, his contributions were crucial in stabilizing the team and laying the groundwork for high scores. Over the course of the World Cup, Yadav accumulated 242 runs at an average of 30.25 across 9 matches, making him the third-highest scorer for the team after Samson and Ishan.
