Lahore, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Reports indicate a significant rise in sexual violence cases in Pakistan, particularly in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province. In the first eight months of this year alone, authorities recorded 1,180 incidents of sexual assault.
A recent case involving a 20-year-old Azerbaijani woman has drawn international attention. She was allegedly drugged and gang-raped by three men in an apartment in Lahore. According to her police complaint, the woman, who hails from Baku, was in Pakistan for a business trip. On September 26, she was reportedly lured to dinner at a local restaurant by two women, who later introduced her to three men.
The victim claims that after dinner, the men offered to drive her and the two women home, but instead took them to an unfamiliar flat. There, she was drugged and assaulted before being released. The suspects also stole her mobile phone and other valuables.
The victim stated that she could identify the suspects by their faces, claiming they were friends of the women who had invited her to dinner. This incident follows a similar case in July, where women from the Netherlands and Venezuela were kidnapped and raped in the same area. Police rescued them approximately two hours later and arrested four individuals suspected of involvement.
These incidents underscore the growing threats faced by women in Pakistan and highlight the failures of institutions meant to ensure their safety. Both educated and uneducated men are implicated in these heinous acts, which include sexual harassment, rape, torture, and murder.
In a separate incident on August 20, a 45-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Rawalpindi, showing signs of torture. Her husband, Faisal Asgar Imam, a medical professor, was arrested on charges of domestic violence.
