New Delhi, February 26: The Supreme Court will hear a significant case on Thursday regarding a chapter titled ‘Corruption in the Judiciary’ from the NCERT Class 8 textbook. The court has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi will preside over the hearing.
On Wednesday, senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, and Mukul Rohatgi raised the issue before the CJI. Following this, the Chief Justice expressed strong discontent regarding the chapter on ‘Corruption in the Judiciary.’ He stated that no one should be allowed to tarnish the reputation of the judiciary.
Expressing his displeasure, the CJI remarked, “As the head of the institution, I have always fulfilled my responsibilities. I will not permit anyone to defame the judiciary, regardless of their stature. The law will take its course. I know how to handle this. I am taking suo motu cognizance.”
The controversy arose after NCERT released a new Class 8 social science textbook on February 24, which included a section on ‘Corruption in the Judiciary.’ However, following the Supreme Court’s stern comments, NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) has apologized and halted the distribution of the textbook containing the contentious chapter.
In light of the situation, the Department of School Education and Literacy promptly instructed that the distribution of this textbook be suspended until further notice. NCERT has complied with the directive and ceased the supply of the book.
In a statement, NCERT acknowledged that the error was unintentional and clarified that there was no intention to undermine the dignity of any institution. The chapter will be rewritten with consultations from relevant authorities. The revised textbook will be provided to students at the beginning of the 2026-27 academic session. NCERT has expressed regret over the mistake and assured that measures will be taken to prevent such errors in the future.
