Jaipur, 1 September (Kiran News). The Supreme Court has taken serious note of ongoing illegal sand (bajri) mining and transportation in Rajasthan, seeking responses from both the Central and State Governments. The order was issued by a bench led by the Chief Justice during a hearing on Monday, acting on a petition filed by Naveen Sharma, President of the All Rajasthan Bajri Truck Operators Welfare Society.

The court also directed that a pending SLP filed by sand lease holders be listed alongside this petition.

Petitioner’s Concerns and Allegations

According to the petitioner, illegal sand mining and transport are rampant in the state, threatening the livelihoods of legal sand truck operators and forcing the public to pay high prices for sand. The petitioner further alleged that illegal mining is damaging the environment, with local political figures and police officers allegedly protecting the sand mafia, enabling them to operate fearlessly. Overloaded vehicles are commonly used for illegal sand transport, and those attempting to stop these activities reportedly face criminal intimidation. The state also suffers significant revenue losses as a result.

The Supreme Court has asked the government authorities to submit their responses and to take effective steps to curb illegal sand mining and take appropriate action against those involved.
