Enhanced Security Measures for Kumbhabhishekam at Meenakshi Amman Temple

Madurai, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Security has been intensified around the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai ahead of the Kumbhabhishekam scheduled for September 17. Authorities have implemented advanced surveillance systems to manage the expected large crowds. A 24-hour control room has been established to monitor the area.

Over 200 CCTV and facial recognition cameras have been installed throughout the temple complex and surrounding streets. A central control room located in Puthu Mandapam will oversee these cameras via 51 LED screens, allowing officials to track crowd movements, identify congestion, and detect any suspicious individuals.

District Collector Nishant Krishna and City Police Commissioner Rajendran inspected the control room and CCTV monitoring center on Wednesday. They reviewed the camera feeds, recording facilities, and the coordination between various departments involved in security and civic arrangements.

Deputy Commissioner of Police A.G. Inigo Thiyan stated that millions of devotees are expected to attend, with many gathering on the four main roads surrounding the temple. The facial recognition system has been updated with images and criminal records of known offenders. If any individual from this list is detected in monitored areas, the software will alert police officers for immediate action. The control room will operate continuously for eight days.

Approximately 160 officials from ten departments, including police, Madurai Corporation, and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, will work in shifts to ensure uninterrupted surveillance and coordination.

Field personnel will be equipped with over 300 walkie-talkies to facilitate rapid communication regarding security, crowd control, sanitation, drinking water supply, and emergency situations. Any complaints or issues reported will be quickly relayed to the relevant departments for prompt action.

Officials are also installing LED screens at busy locations like Periyar Bus Stand and Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand to broadcast the rituals live. This will allow devotees who cannot enter the temple complex to witness the ceremonies and help reduce the crowd pressure on the surrounding roads.
