Supreme Court Orders NIA Investigation Review in Murshidabad Violence Case

New Delhi, February 11: The Supreme Court has issued a significant ruling regarding the National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the violence that erupted in Beldanga, Murshidabad district, West Bengal. The apex court has directed that the state government’s petition be sent back to the Calcutta High Court for reconsideration of the issues raised by the state.

The Supreme Court also instructed the NIA to submit its investigation report in a sealed envelope to the Calcutta High Court. The court clarified that the Chief Justice of the High Court will lead the division bench that will hear the pending petition related to this matter.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju, representing the central government, informed the court that the border with Bangladesh is a “porous border” where serious violence occurred, involving the use of lethal weapons.

He stated that while the NIA is conducting an independent investigation, the state government has not been providing the necessary documents to the agency. The central government requested the court to direct the state government to furnish these documents.

During the hearing, Justice Bagchi noted that the state government has challenged the order that allowed the NIA to conduct the investigation. He emphasized that the justification for the NIA’s investigation will depend on the High Court’s decision.

The violence initially erupted on January 16 when the body of Alaudin Sheikh, a migrant laborer from Murshidabad who was killed in Jharkhand, arrived in Beldanga. Protests ensued, with demonstrators blocking roads, alleging that Alaudin was murdered because he was mistaken for a Bangladeshi due to his Bengali language.
