Mumbai, April 3: The political atmosphere is heating up ahead of the upcoming by-election for the Baramati Assembly seat in Maharashtra. Sunetra Pawar, the state’s Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president, will file her nomination on April 6. Several prominent leaders are expected to be present during this event.
According to sources, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will also be in attendance during the nomination process.
This by-election is being held following the passing of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who tragically died in a plane crash on January 28, along with four others. Ajit Pawar had a significant influence in Baramati, having been elected as an MLA eight times, making this seat politically crucial. Interestingly, the NCP, led by Sharad Pawar, has decided not to field a candidate for this seat. However, its ally, the Congress party, has made it clear that it will not allow the election to be one-sided.
In addition to Baramati, a by-election will also take place on April 23 for the Rahuri Assembly seat in Ahmednagar district. In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Shivaji Kardile contested from this seat for the BJP and defeated NCP candidate Prajakta Tanpure by a margin of over 14,000 votes. Following Shivaji’s passing from a heart attack in October 2025, this seat has also become vacant. The results for both by-elections will be announced on May 4.
The Election Commission has stated that by-elections are being held for eight Assembly seats across six states. Voting will occur on April 23 in Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura, while Gujarat and Maharashtra will hold their elections on April 9, 2026. The Commission has instructed state administrations to ensure free, fair, and peaceful voting, along with necessary security and electoral preparations.
