Shimla, August 22: Sudhir Sharma, a BJP legislator and former minister from Himachal Pradesh, faced questioning from the state’s Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau regarding a disproportionate assets case. Following the inquiry, Sharma accused the Congress government of targeting opposition legislators during the assembly session and engaging in “political vendetta.”
In a statement to the media, Sharma expressed his respect for the law and confirmed his full cooperation with the investigation. He stated that he had provided all necessary facts and documents wherever requested by the vigilance department and answered every question based on evidence.
“We are law-abiding citizens. All facts will ultimately come to light before the people of Himachal Pradesh. We have nothing to hide, and I will continue to cooperate with the investigation,” he asserted.
Sharma raised concerns about the timing of the questioning, questioning the appropriateness of summoning an opposition legislator while the assembly session is ongoing. He alleged that the Congress government is trying to pressure opposition members due to their raising public interest issues in the assembly.
He remarked, “It is unprecedented to summon a legislator during an ongoing assembly session. The current government appears intent on suppressing the voice of the opposition, but this attitude cannot last long.”
Challenging the investigation process, he pointed out that the case is linked to Dharamshala, where all relevant records are located. “If the matter pertains to Dharamshala and the documents are there, why was I summoned to the vigilance headquarters in Shimla? What was the urgency? Every investigation has a process and protocol that should be followed,” he stated.
Notably, Sudhir Sharma was among six Congress legislators who voted for BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan in the 2024 Rajya Sabha elections alongside three independent legislators. Subsequently, he left Congress to join the BJP and contested in the by-elections, where Congress won six out of nine seats, while BJP secured three.
