
New Delhi, June 24: Sudha Singh has been one of India’s finest steeplechase athletes. She competes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event and has represented the country at the Olympics. Through her talent, hard work, and determination, she has won medals for India at both the Asian Games and the Asian Championships.
Born on June 25, 1986, in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, Sudha began representing India on international platforms in 2005.
Her greatest achievement came in 2010 at the Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China, where she won a gold medal with a time of 9:55.67 minutes. This was the inaugural women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase event at the Asian Games, and Sudha became the first Asian champion in this category. She further solidified her excellence by winning a gold medal at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships and a silver medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.
In 2012, Sudha broke her own national record with a time of 9:47.70 minutes, qualifying for the London Olympics. She represented India in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. Although she did not secure a medal in either event, her participation was a significant achievement for Indian athletics.
Looking at Sudha Singh’s accomplishments, she won a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Additionally, she claimed gold at the 2017 Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar and silver medals at the Asian Championships held in Guangzhou in 2009, Kobe in 2011, and Pune in 2013. All these competitions featured her in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Sudha retired from competitive sports in 2022. In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Government of India in 2012 and received the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2021.
