Liverpool, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Liverpool FC has announced that Richard Hughes has stepped down from his role as Sporting Director. Hughes joined the club in June 2024 from AFC Bournemouth and played a pivotal role in several key football decisions during his tenure.
Under his leadership, Liverpool secured their 20th league title in the 2024-25 season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the following season. Mike Gordon, President of Fenway Sports Group (FSG), expressed gratitude towards Hughes, stating, “He did a tremendous job during a critical period of change for the club.” Gordon noted that Hughes significantly contributed to Liverpool’s success and future plans.
“Richard Hughes joined the club at a time of transition,” Gordon continued. “He was responsible for the football operations department, overseeing player recruitment and supporting the coaching staff.” He emphasized that the club’s achievements in these areas reflect Hughes’s hard work and dedication. While respecting Hughes’s personal decision, Gordon wished him and his family the best for the future.
Hughes, who previously held a senior role in football at Bournemouth, expressed pride in serving Liverpool and thanked the owners, staff, players, and supporters. In an official statement, he said, “I am grateful to the club’s owners for their support and leadership, as well as to all the staff who played a crucial role in bringing Liverpool to its current level.”
He also acknowledged the players for their contributions to the club’s successes and thanked the fans for their unwavering support. “I will continue to follow and support the club with much love, and I wish success to everyone involved this season and beyond,” he added.
Liverpool has confirmed that the process to appoint Hughes’s successor is already underway, with an announcement expected soon. This decision comes after Hughes spent just over two years in the role, during which the club underwent significant changes both on and off the pitch, successfully maintaining its status among the top clubs in English football.
