Kharagpur, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : A school student was shot while riding a bicycle in Kharagpur, West Midnapore, on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Akshay Jha, is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Kolkata, where his condition is reported as serious.
Local sources indicate that the incident occurred around 11:30 AM in the Old Settlement area, specifically Ward 20 near the railway zone. Akshay was sitting on the back of a bicycle when shots were allegedly fired at them, with one bullet striking him in the chest.
He was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Kolkata for advanced medical care. The cyclist accompanying him stated that he was unaware of the reasons behind the shooting or the identity of the shooter. Interestingly, residents nearby reported not hearing any gunfire, leading to confusion about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police have launched an investigation into the case. Officers from the Kharagpur Town Police Station are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. They have expressed confidence that a shooting did occur. Initial inquiries suggest that the gunfire may have been the result of a dispute between two groups.
As part of the investigation, several suspects have been taken into custody for questioning. Local councilor D. Basanti revealed that Akshay is the son of a railway health department employee. Upon hearing the news, she visited the railway hospital and learned that two shots had been fired, one hitting the minor in the left side of his chest.
Basanti also noted that two individuals on a scooter without a license plate were seen at the time of the incident. She speculated that the intended target might have been Sagar Kumar, a friend of Akshay’s, who was also present. Both boys were reportedly out for snacks at the time.
The councilor added that the suspected shooter, Prasad, is believed to be affiliated with a local group linked to previous shooting incidents. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Papia Sultana confirmed that there were two rival groups involved in the shooting. She stated that five individuals have already been arrested and that seven police teams have been formed to investigate the matter. Authorities are currently reviewing footage from all CCTV cameras in the area to gather more information.
