New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : A significant discussion took place on Thursday in New Delhi between India and Russia, focusing on enhancing defense collaboration. The meeting involved a review of the existing military-technical cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, new opportunities for joint production and development of defense equipment were explored.
This meeting is viewed as a vital step in strengthening the long-standing strategic defense partnership between India and Russia. It marked the 24th session of the intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation and the defense industry.
The opening session of the meeting was attended by senior officials from both countries. It was co-chaired by Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of Defense Production from India, and Andrei A. Boytsov, First Deputy Director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation from Russia.
According to the Ministry of Defense, both sides reviewed the progress of ongoing military-technical cooperation. Special emphasis was placed on new initiatives for joint production and development in the defense sector. The goal is to further strengthen the defense partnership and expand collaboration into new areas.
Notably, defense cooperation between India and Russia has been a cornerstone of their strategic partnership for several decades. Over time, this relationship has evolved beyond merely purchasing defense equipment to include joint research, technological development, and the co-production of defense systems in India. An agreement for military-technical cooperation is currently in effect for the period from 2021 to 2031, focusing on enhancing joint research, development, production, and maintenance of defense equipment.
Prominent examples of India-Russia defense cooperation include the BrahMos missile system, Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft, T-90 tanks, and the AK-203 rifle, all of which involve joint development or production in India. Previously, on October 29, 2025, a delegation led by Sanjeev Kumar participated in the 23rd meeting of this working group in Moscow.
With the 24th meeting now hosted in New Delhi, both nations are concentrating on advancing military-technical cooperation and exploring shared development and production opportunities in the defense industry.
