Student Leader Devendra Mahato Declares Ongoing Fight After JSSC-CGL Exams Canceled

Ranchi, August 18: Following the announcement to cancel the JSSC-CGL exams and all tests conducted by the TDPPL agency, student leaders have hailed this as a significant victory in their long struggle. Devendra Nath Mahato, who has been on hunger strike for 16 days, stated that this is not the final victory and their fight for comprehensive reforms in the education and recruitment system will continue.

Student Habiba, who has also been on hunger strike for 14 days, expressed her joy at the government’s decision. She said she feels immensely happy and that it seems their hard work has finally paid off. Emotionally, she remarked, “Today, my feet are not on the ground.”

Mahato emphasized that the government has acted against the irregularities and fraud that the protesters initially fought against. He noted that their primary demand, for which students risked their lives and went on hunger strikes, has been met.

He stated, “Action has been taken against the irregularities and fraud in our system. Our demands have been fulfilled. However, there is no cause for celebration, as much work remains.” Mahato thanked the government and Chief Minister Hemant Soren for the decision. He added that their struggle will now focus on reforming the entire education and examination system. He insisted that merely canceling one exam will not provide a permanent solution. A system must be established to prevent any future irregularities in recruitment exams.

He also expressed gratitude to the students, parents, media, police, administration, and government who supported the movement. Mahato remarked that the government took the students’ issues seriously and made a positive decision regarding their demands. He mentioned that significant facts have emerged from the investigation related to the JSSC-CGL and TDPPL exams, and actions are being taken against those allegedly involved. He hopes that investigative agencies will thoroughly examine the matter and identify those behind the alleged corruption.

Mahato stressed the need for the investigation to proceed fairly and comprehensively. He stated that merely taking action at a lower level will not suffice; it is essential to reach those behind the alleged examination syndicates. However, as of the time of this report, both Devendra Nath Mahato and Habiba had not ended their hunger strike. The protesting students indicated that they would decide on the hunger strike only after the government clarifies the next steps and their other demands.

On Monday evening, following a special cabinet meeting, the government announced the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exams and all tests conducted by TDPPL. Additionally, a committee headed by IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal has been formed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the recruitment exams of JPSC and JSSC from 2014 to the present and to reform the examination system.
