Aizawl, August 17: The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, stated on Monday that the influential women’s organization, ‘Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl’ (MHIP), has played a crucial role in implementing the ‘Mizo Marriage, Divorce, and Property Inheritance Act, 2014.’
The Chief Minister made these remarks during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the new headquarters of MHIP in Aizawl.
He noted that due to the organization’s exemplary work, MHIP was awarded the ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar’ by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2016.
Lalduhoma emphasized that the initiatives of MHIP have provided significant relief and support to women and children across the state.
As the only major non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to the welfare of women and children, established with government support, it is appropriate for the government to continue providing extensive assistance to MHIP.
The Chief Minister remarked that MHIP and other voluntary organizations are key pillars of society, guiding the younger generation and functioning as vital social institutions. Therefore, the government believes it is essential to provide suitable and respectful facilities for such organizations.
Looking ahead, Lalduhoma encouraged MHIP to become self-reliant by generating its own income to strengthen its operations and facilities. He also mentioned that the government is taking steps to assist other NGOs.
He revealed that a large convention center is being constructed under the ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0’ initiative on land belonging to the Young Mizo Association (YMA) in Thingsulthliah. Additionally, hostels for working women are being built in seven different locations across the state as part of efforts for women’s welfare and well-being.
Emphasizing the need for efficient and rapid implementation of development projects, the Chief Minister stated that under the newly launched ‘Financial Advisory System,’ department secretaries have been granted significant financial authority to expedite various projects.
Regarding the funds received under the ‘Special Assistance for Capital Investment’ (SASCI) scheme, which are allocated annually, he mentioned that it is essential to complete previous projects and settle their accounts before utilizing new funds.
He called for better cooperation and coordination among all stakeholders to ensure that development projects are completed smoothly and within the stipulated time frame.
Lalduhoma also urged MHIP to closely monitor the construction of their new headquarters from start to finish to ensure high-quality work. The old headquarters building of MHIP was first used on April 20, 1993, and the new building will be constructed at the same location at an estimated cost of ₹3.70 crores. Funding for this project is being provided under SASCI for the fiscal year 2025-26.
Established on July 6, 1974, MHIP is the largest voluntary non-governmental organization in Mizoram, working towards women’s empowerment, social welfare, and community development.
