New Delhi, April 6: In IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced a defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday. This marks CSK’s third consecutive loss this season. Despite the setback, head coach Stephen Fleming defended the team.
Fleming stated that CSK needs to implement their plans more effectively. He noted the presence of several new and young players who have the potential to perform well in the future. Fleming believes that the team is still developing and will grow stronger over time.
During the post-match press conference, he remarked, “I genuinely think we have some great talent. This season, five or six new players have made their debut, and we believe their significance will increase in the future.”
The five-time champions have faced criticism for spending heavily on uncapped Indian players like Prashant Veer and wicketkeeper Karthik Sharma while sidelining experienced players. Fleming clarified that these changes were intentional and necessary.
Defending the bowlers, Fleming said, “There is a lot of pressure on bowlers in the IPL, especially with the ‘Impact Rule’ in place. You can see that batsmen are playing freely, and their skill levels are very high. This is why all bowling attacks are under pressure this season. We need to execute our plans better, no doubt about it. However, the bowling attack faces significant pressure, especially in favorable conditions.”
Fleming further explained, “Last season, we had to invest heavily in Indian talent to rebuild the franchise and lay a strong foundation for the future. We lost some key players in terms of building our team’s core structure. This is why we spent money for the future, and we have a complete record of that.”
He elaborated on targeting uncapped players in the auction, stating, “It is becoming increasingly challenging as teams acquire uncapped players together. This presents a significant challenge for us. However, we are continuously monitoring the direction of the game and trying to include players we believe will become future stars or bring a new direction to the sport.”
CSK’s bowlers also had a disappointing performance against RCB. Batting first, RCB scored 250 runs, losing only three wickets in their 20 overs. In response, CSK’s entire team was bowled out for 207 runs in just 19.4 overs.
