New Delhi, April 7: Amaravati has officially been designated as the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh. The Indian government issued a gazette notification on Monday confirming this status.
This decision followed the approval of President Droupadi Murmu, who sanctioned the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The bill had been passed by Parliament the previous week.
According to the notification released by the Ministry of Law, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Act, 2026, will come into effect on June 2, 2024.
This amendment modifies the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act. It includes the capital region declared under the Amaravati Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014.
Parliament granted final approval on April 2, officially declaring Amaravati as the capital. The Rajya Sabha passed the bill via voice vote, while the Lok Sabha approved it a day earlier.
This law resolves years of political uncertainty and discussions surrounding the three-capital model. Future attempts to change the capital or implement a three-capital plan will now be impossible.
A total of 35 MPs debated the bill in Parliament. All but two members from the YSR Congress Party supported the bill. The YSRCP opposed it, claiming it disregarded farmers’ interests, as they had given up their land for the capital’s development.
The foundation for making Amaravati the capital was laid in 2015 during the Telugu Desam Party’s administration. After the YSRCP came to power in 2019, all projects in Amaravati were halted, leading to the proposal of the three-capital idea.
However, following the return of TDP leader NDA to power in 2024, the decision was made to establish Amaravati as the sole capital, and projects were resumed last year.
