New Delhi, April 6: Former Under-23 Asian Championship bronze medalist Lalit will compete for the gold medal on Tuesday, while two other Indian wrestlers aim for bronze in their respective weight categories.
The 23-year-old Lalit showcased his skills in the semifinals, dominating China’s Huoying Shi with an 11-3 victory. However, the Indian team had a mixed day, as Aman in the 77 kg category and former champion Sunil Kumar in the 87 kg category lost their semifinal matches.
Lalit, who recently secured a bronze medal at the Muhammad Malo Wrestling Tournament, will face Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiar Botirov, the bronze medalist from the 2025 Asian Championship. Botirov defeated local favorite Ulan Ulu 5-3 in the other semifinal.
In the 77 kg Greco-Roman semifinal, Aman lost to Iran’s gold medalist from the Zagreb Open, Ali Oskoo, with a score of 3-13. After winning against China’s Halishan Bahejiang 6-4 in the quarterfinals, Aman will now compete against South Korea’s Yeonghun Noh for the bronze medal. Sunil Kumar, the 2020 Asian champion, faced a tough match in the 87 kg Greco-Roman semifinal, losing 0-8 to Iran’s Gholamreza Farokhisenjani.
In the 65 kg Greco-Roman category, Sunny Kumar was eliminated after losing in the qualification round to Kazakhstan’s Saifulla Kurman. Additionally, Joginder Rathi was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the men’s 130 kg Greco-Roman category after losing to South Korea’s Minseok Kim.
The South Korean wrestler later lost in the semifinals to Iran’s Mirzazadeh, ending any hopes for the Indian wrestler to advance through the repechage round. On Tuesday, five other Indian wrestlers—Sahil (60 kg), Sachin Sahrawat (67 kg), Anil (72 kg), Prince (82 kg), and Nitesh (97 kg)—will be in action.
