Guwahati, April 9: During the assembly elections in Assam, a delegation from Sri Lanka visited a polling station in Kamrup district on Thursday. They are in Assam to understand India’s electoral process under the ‘International Election Visitor Program’ (IEVP). During their visit, they also planted a tree.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) shared this information on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “During a visit to a polling station in Kamrup district, a Sri Lankan delegation observed the electoral process under the ‘International Election Visitor Program’ (IEVP) and planted a tree. This sends a message of environmentally friendly elections.”
Previously, on April 7, the Election Commission launched IEVP 2026 for the upcoming general elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry in New Delhi. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the program alongside Election Commissioners S.S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi at the ‘India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management.’
In his inaugural speech, CEC Gyanesh Kumar expressed that the Commission views elections in India as a celebration of democracy, working in mission mode to ensure free, fair, and inclusive elections. He encouraged the visiting representatives to make the most of their time in India and to closely observe, understand, and experience the country’s diversity.
In the first phase of this program, the delegation is touring Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. In the second phase, they will visit West Bengal and Tamil Nadu starting April 20. A total of 43 representatives from 23 countries are participating in the first phase, including representatives from five foreign embassies based in Delhi.
As part of this initiative, the representatives were shown demonstrations of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and participated in a ‘mock poll’ to gain firsthand experience of the voting process. They expressed interest in the technological innovations and administrative security measures involved in India’s electoral system.
The representatives also engaged in dialogue sessions with experts, where they had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the operational methodologies of election management in India.
