Kolkata, September 1: The Kolkata High Court has directed the West Bengal police to provide adequate armed security to Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra. This decision comes after she faced egg attacks during a recent visit to her Krishnanagar constituency.
Justice Sougata Bhattacharya ordered that two police officers accompany Moitra whenever she visits her constituency to ensure her safety and prevent any disturbances. This police protection will be in place for 30 days, with the next hearing scheduled for October 1.
On the same day the court issued this order, Moitra encountered protests while attending a party event in Chapra, Nadia district.
Justice Bhattacharya stated that Moitra should inform the police in advance about her visit dates so that security arrangements can be made accordingly.
Moitra, while approaching the Kolkata High Court, expressed that she often faces protests during her constituency visits. She claimed these disturbances are politically motivated, hindering her ability to serve the public effectively.
Her lawyer, Kalyan Banerjee, noted that Moitra has been subjected to attacks involving eggs, potatoes, and stones during her visits. He emphasized that despite being an MP, she has not been provided with adequate security.
“MPs who recently left the Trinamool Congress for other parties are receiving security, while those who remain are facing attacks,” he stated.
After hearing these arguments, the judge remarked that it is unacceptable for an MP to be attacked. He emphasized that the state must address this issue firmly to ensure that MPs can work without obstruction in their constituencies.
As the court made this statement, Moitra faced further protests in Chapra. Reports indicate that black flags were displayed around her car as she exited following a Trinamool Congress workers’ meeting.
Protesters shouted slogans demanding her to “go back,” and Moitra attributed the attacks to supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Following the incident, political tensions escalated in the area, prompting police intervention to restore order. Speaking to the media, Moitra stated, “This chaos is being orchestrated by those who have left the party, with assistance from the BJP.”
She criticized former Trinamool Congress leaders, labeling them as “dishonest,” and referenced punitive actions taken against district council members for anti-party activities. Moitra also condemned the harassment of Trinamool Congress workers through police and administrative pressure.
Conversely, Gopal Das, head of the Chapra BJP IT cell, and local resident Ambarjit Roy accused Moitra of being behind unrest, drug trafficking, and extortion politics in the Chapra area.
They claimed that the display of black flags by locals was in protest against alleged insults to Hindu deities, asserting that the BJP was not involved in this incident.
