Kolkata, September 1: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and MP from Diamond Harbour, emerged from the Shakespeare Sarani police station after more than six hours of questioning. This interrogation was linked to an FIR filed regarding a clash on August 27, during which illegal billboards were allegedly removed from the roof of his party’s office located on Camac Street in central Kolkata.
Tensions escalated on August 27 when employees of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), accompanied by police, arrived to remove billboards from Banerjee’s office. It is alleged that workers and other leaders from the Trinamool Congress, led by Abhishek Banerjee, opposed the municipal officials and police, resulting in a physical altercation.
According to the FIR registered at the Shakespeare Sarani police station, Trinamool Congress workers are accused of assaulting duty personnel and attempting to disrespect a female police officer.
Two out of three FIRs include names of Abhishek Banerjee, party leader Derek O’Brien, and other Trinamool leaders such as Humayun Kabir and Baishwanar Chatterjee. So far, police have arrested 14 individuals in connection with this incident.
After the interrogation, Abhishek Banerjee spoke to reporters, dismissing all allegations against him and his associates, particularly the claim regarding disrespecting the female police officer.
He stated, “No such incident occurred that day. There was no harassment of anyone. We have video evidence to support our claims. The police brutally dragged our supporters down the stairs. If the government is elected by the people, why is it so afraid?”
The Trinamool leader further asserted that police actions would not politically hinder them. “They can do whatever they want. In a democracy, the rulers do not have the final say. False cases will not silence us,” he added.
