Big news for Squid Game fans worldwide—although the blockbuster K-drama’s final season just premiered, it seems the deadly game may not be over just yet. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind Netflix’s global sensation, has teased a potential spin-off series, hinting that the Squid Game universe could soon expand beyond the arena of survival.
What’s the Idea Behind the Spin-Off?
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dong-hyuk opened up about an idea that’s been lingering in his mind. It revolves around the three-year narrative gap between Season 1 and Season 2. Fans may recall that during this time, protagonist Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) was seen wandering aimlessly, searching for the elusive recruiters of the game.
Dong-hyuk explained, “That’s a three-year gap and maybe I can depict what the recruiters, or Captain Park (Oh Dal-soo), or the officers, or the masked men were doing during that time. Not inside the gaming arena, but what their lives were like outside of it.”
This idea marks a significant tonal shift, taking viewers out of the deadly games and into the shadowy world of those who make the games possible. It hints at a psychological and character-driven exploration rather than a survival-based plot.
Not a Sequel, But a Side Story
Importantly, Dong-hyuk clarified that this spin-off, if it materializes, will not serve as a sequel. With Season 3 confirmed as the series finale, the original storyline will officially conclude. But the doors to side stories remain open.
“You’ll feel it when you watch it,” Dong-hyuk said of the final season. “But I’m not trying to say that I’m completely closing the doors for a spin-off or a sequel because they say never say never.”
This suggests that while Gi-hun’s journey may end, the morally complex and dystopian universe of Squid Game has more tales to tell—possibly through the lens of other key characters.
The Toll of Creativity: A Price Paid in Health
While fans continue to be enthralled by the show’s tense narrative and emotional depth, few are aware of the physical toll it has taken on its creator. Dong-hyuk revealed that during the production of Season 1, he had to get eight teeth removed due to stress. For Seasons 2 and 3, he lost two more teeth, which he has yet to fix.
He added, “The problem is that for Season 2 and Season 3, we had to shoot and write simultaneously. It was like we were making a season, and we tried our best to bring Season 3 as soon as possible… we had to shoot for almost a year, so it was very physically demanding.”
Given this intense workload, a spin-off might offer a less grueling creative process for the director—an opportunity to explore the same world, but from a new, possibly more manageable, perspective.
A World Beyond the Game?
Whether or not the spin-off becomes a reality, one thing is clear: Hwang Dong-hyuk has tapped into something profound with Squid Game. Its themes of desperation, inequality, and the human condition resonate deeply with audiences around the globe. A spin-off exploring the unseen architects of this twisted system may not only add layers to the story—but also provide fans with a fresh and thrilling angle on a now-iconic world.
