Special Session of Uttarakhand Assembly to Address Womens Reservation Bill

Dehradun, April 28: The Uttarakhand Assembly will convene a special session on Tuesday, where the state government is expected to present a censure motion against opposition parties. This motion is likely to address the alleged ‘opposition’ to the Women’s Reservation (Amendment) Bill in Parliament.

Intense debates are anticipated between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, as both parties have ramped up their political rhetoric ahead of the session.

The Congress has announced plans to stage a protest at the assembly, accusing the state government of using this special session for political gain rather than constructive debate.

Before the session begins, both parties have engaged in protests in the city, trading accusations over the bill. The BJP has labeled Congress as ‘anti-women,’ while the opposition has retaliated by accusing the government of politicizing the women’s reservation issue for electoral benefits.

Amid rising political tensions, the BJP’s women’s wing is also preparing to hold a ‘torch’ rally around 6 PM to express their dissent against the opposition’s stance on this legislation.

It is noteworthy that the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill did not pass in the Lok Sabha. Since then, the ruling party has targeted Congress and its allied parties, alleging that they have obstructed critical steps towards empowering women.

This special assembly session is viewed as a platform for legislators to discuss the implications of the bill’s failure and reiterate the state government’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
