Kolkata, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, Rathindra Bose, has called a hearing to address the disqualification of ten rebel lawmakers from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday. Among those involved is Ritabrata Banerjee, the leader of the rebel faction and currently the official leader of the opposition in the assembly.
Sources indicate that the hearing is set for 3 PM in the Speaker’s chamber within the assembly premises. It is expected that Ritabrata and his legal counsel will attend the session.
On the other side, veteran TMC legislator Shovandev Chattopadhyay and his lawyer are likely to represent the faction led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, which is described as the “original but minority” group.
Following a split in the TMC, Shovandev Chattopadhyay initiated legal proceedings in the Supreme Court to disqualify the ten rebel MLAs, including Ritabrata Banerjee. Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that the final authority on the disqualification of these MLAs rests with the Speaker. The court also urged that a prompt decision be made regarding this matter.
Speaker Bose, who was abroad on official duties when the Supreme Court issued its ruling, returned to Kolkata but was hospitalized earlier this month due to health issues. Now back at work, he has prioritized the significant hearing concerning the disqualification of the ten rebel MLAs.
Recently, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has prohibited the use of the original name “All India Trinamool Congress” and its electoral symbol “Grassroots and Flower.” The ECI has assigned the group led by Mamata Banerjee the new name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” and a new symbol, “Football Player.” Meanwhile, Ritabrata’s faction will now be known as “Democratic Trinamool Congress” with the symbol “Envelope.”
