Johannesburg, May 12: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced his intention to take a report from an independent panel to judicial review. This report suggests that he may have violated the constitution.
In a national address on Monday night, Ramaphosa responded to the situation. Just last Friday, the Constitutional Court issued a historic ruling directing Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.
According to Xinhua News Agency, this lengthy legal dispute is linked to the so-called ‘Phala Phala’ scandal. In February 2020, it was revealed that $580,000 in cash was found at his private farm.
An independent panel established by Parliament previously stated in its report that the president may have possibly breached the constitution.
However, Ramaphosa has consistently maintained that he neither misappropriated public funds nor committed any crime. He also stated his willingness to cooperate fully with all relevant authorities.
In his national address, he said, “Based on my legal team’s advice and the directives of the Constitutional Court, I have decided to seek a judicial review of the independent panel’s report as soon as possible.”
He further clarified that he is not taking this step to disrespect Parliament or its processes, but rather to ensure that such conclusions are legally and factually accurate.
The president emphasized that he wanted to review this report earlier, but refrained from doing so after a majority in Parliament rejected the impeachment proposal against him. The Constitutional Court has now deemed that decision incorrect, stating that the report should be sent to the impeachment committee.
Despite opposition calls for his resignation, Ramaphosa remains firm in his stance. He argues that since the court did not directly convict him, resigning now would be premature before the constitutional process is completed.
At the end of his address, he affirmed that his government will continue its efforts to combat crime and strengthen government institutions. The Speaker of Parliament, Thoko Didiza, has also confirmed that Parliament will comply with the court’s ruling.
