North Koreas Firm Stance on Nuclear Program Ahead of Kim Yo-jongs China Visit

Seoul, June 7: North Korea has once again made it clear that its status as a nuclear power is entirely non-negotiable. Kim Yo-jong, sister of the country’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un, issued a statement on Sunday asserting that North Korea will neither abandon its position nor tolerate any threats against its nuclear status.

This statement comes just as Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to arrive in Pyongyang for a two-day visit on Monday. The remarks were published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

China is regarded as North Korea’s most significant political and economic ally. Amid international sanctions and diplomatic isolation, Beijing has long supported Pyongyang.

In her statement, Kim Yo-jong also criticized the United States. She dismissed claims made after a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing last month, where both leaders described the denuclearization of North Korea as a shared goal.

Kim labeled this as “the spread of false information,” asserting that the U.S. continues to live in outdated and impractical dreams.

For years, North Korea has maintained that its nuclear and ballistic missile programs are essential for national security. In 2023, it even enshrined its status as a nuclear power in its constitution. Following the failure of denuclearization talks between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump in 2019, Pyongyang has accelerated its nuclear program.

According to North Korean state media, Kim Jong-un inspected a major weapons factory over the weekend and ordered an increase in missile production capacity. He emphasized the need to ensure a sufficient supply of missiles.

Justifying the enhancement of its nuclear capabilities under the constitution, Kim described nuclear strength as the strongest logic in the struggle against those who “worship power,” stating that North Korea will never compromise on its security and sovereignty.
