Gang Busted for Gold Scam in Maharashtra, Five Arrested

Mumbai, June 7: In a significant crackdown, police in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar have dismantled a gang that lured victims with promises of cheap gold, only to rob them. Authorities reported the arrest of five gang members, who were found in possession of cash worth millions, along with gold coins and jewelry.

According to Ahilyanagar police, the gang lured a complainant, Anil Nalawade from Raigad district, to a flyover in Ahilyanagar Taluka under the pretense of selling gold at a low price. There, the accused assaulted him and stole his gold and cash.

After the robbery, the victim filed a complaint with the police. In response, the local crime branch (LCB) initiated an investigation. During the inquiry, it was discovered that the suspects were residents of the Kinwat area in Nanded district. Subsequently, a police team apprehended all five suspects in Kinwat.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Shivaji Mohite, Raju Mohite, Akshay Mohite, Chhagan Mohite, and Dinesh Jadhav. Police seized a total of ₹26.52 lakh worth of goods from them, including ₹16 lakh in cash, gold jewelry valued at ₹2 lakh, gold coins, and a four-wheeler.

In a separate incident, Maharashtra’s cyber police arrested 27-year-old Varun Khadane from Pune for posting obscene and derogatory remarks about Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on social media. Following his arrest, he was presented in the Mumbai Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Since the charges were bailable, the court granted him bail.

Khadane, who recently started a job in Mumbai, was taken into custody after a technical investigation revealed his online activities. Police stated that although he did not directly mention Amruta Fadnavis by name, his posts referred to “the Chief Minister’s wife” and contained derogatory remarks that could tarnish her image. A case has been registered against him under Section 352 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.
