Somnath Swabhiman Festival to Mark 1000 Years of Historic Event

GIR SOMNATH: The ‘Somnath Swabhiman Festival’ will be held from 8 to 10 January in Gir Somnath, Gujarat, commemorating a significant historical and spiritual event. This year’s festival is especially important as it marks the 1000th anniversary of Mahmud Ghaznavi’s attack on the Somnath temple. The city of Somnath aims to unite the nation and the world with messages of faith, pride, and ancient culture during this momentous occasion.

During the three-day festival, continuous chanting of ‘Omkar Nath’ will take place for 24 hours inside the Somnath temple, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. The temple premises will be beautifully illuminated, and boats will be arranged along the seashore, decorated with special lighting to provide devotees with a unique and divine experience.

To accommodate the large number of visitors and ensure convenience, daily trains will arrive in Somnath from four cities—Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. These trains will bring saints, members of religious institutions, and numerous devotees from across the country.

On the evening of 10 January at 5:30 pm, an important meeting will be held with the Somnath Trust. A grand drone show will also be organised on this occasion, showcasing Somnath’s history, struggles, and unwavering faith through modern technology.

On 11 January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay homage to Somnath Mahadev. The grand tribute will begin from Shankh Circle and proceed to the statue of Hamirji Gohil. A procession symbolising strength and valour will accompany the event.

Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to address a large gathering on the same day, sharing his thoughts on bravery, resilience, and steadfast faith. The event is expected to attract over one lakh participants.

Gujarat’s Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani described the festival as a symbol of Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership and cultural outlook. He highlighted that this event is a major effort to connect the younger generation with faith and culture by linking pilgrimage sites like Somnath, Dwarka, Kashi, Ayodhya, and Mahakal.

The minister further stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the administration is fully alert and focused on ensuring the convenience, safety, and smooth arrangements for devotees travelling from far and wide.
