New Delhi, July 23: India’s Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, held a significant bilateral meeting with the Commonwealth’s elected Secretary-General, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, during the Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ meeting in Glasgow.
During the discussions, Thakur highlighted India’s key sports reforms aimed at enhancing grassroots participation and nurturing talent. Initiatives such as the ‘Khelo India Policy’ and the ‘Asmitā League’ were emphasized.
Thakur shared on X, “I had a meaningful meeting with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey during the Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ meeting in Glasgow.”
He noted, “These revolutionary sports reforms, including the ‘Khelo India Policy’ and ‘Asmitā League,’ are strengthening sports at the grassroots level, promoting gender inclusivity, and paving the way for sporting excellence across the country.”
Both leaders also discussed ways to leverage the ‘Commonwealth Advantage’ to deepen international sports partnerships, promote gender equality, and explore new opportunities in trade and investment as India prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
Thakur participated in the Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ meeting on Wednesday, where he spoke about India’s growing reputation in sports and confirmed the country’s preparations for the historic, sustainable, and memorable 2030 Commonwealth Games, alongside world-class arrangements in Ahmedabad.
As the leader of the Indian delegation, Thakur is in Glasgow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. He will participate in various events during the games and engage in discussions with heads of delegations from other countries to advance India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad.
