New Delhi, April 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the remarkable achievement of Shreya Mundra, a gold medalist at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program on Sunday. Shreya and her father expressed their gratitude to PM Modi for acknowledging her success.
In an interview with a news agency, Shreya shared that the Prime Minister elaborated on the entire process of the competition. She believes that once other students learn about it, they may also develop an interest in mathematics.
Shreya mentioned that neither she nor her family ever imagined she would win a gold medal in this competition. She also thanked the government for the training she received at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).
Describing the competition’s various stages, she explained that during the computational round, candidates must solve 30 questions in three hours as part of the IOKM. Approximately 250 candidates are selected from each state for this round.
In the next phase, known as the Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO), around 35 students from each state are chosen. This stage consists of six questions to be completed within three hours.
Shreya emphasized that to reach the national level, participants receive training at the regional level, which has been very beneficial for her. Numerous training camps are held, and teachers provide support.
Regarding her training at HBCSE, she noted that her parents were pleased to send her there, as it is a national-level camp.
However, the gold medalist pointed out that girls’ participation in such Olympiads remains low. She attributed this to safety concerns. Shreya mentioned that camps are organized after the first two rounds, and she considers herself fortunate to have been part of it. She believes that enhancing safety at these camps would encourage more parents to send their daughters.
Shreya stated that PM Modi’s acknowledgment of her victory would inspire many students who find science and mathematics challenging to take an interest in these subjects.
Her father, Shantanu Mundra, described the Prime Minister’s mention of their achievement as a “moment of pride.” He differentiated between Olympiad preparation and competitive exam preparation, noting that Olympiad training emphasizes conceptual understanding, while competitive exam preparation often involves extensive study hours.
Shantanu stressed the importance of instilling confidence and independence in his daughter, allowing her to pursue her interests. He encouraged other parents to support their children in choosing subjects based on their passions.
He added that PM Modi’s recognition of daughters at this level would motivate other parents to encourage their children as well.
