Nagoya, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Shapath Bharadwaj made a notable impression at the Asian Games in Nagoya, qualifying for the men’s trap shooting finals with a score of 117 points. He secured the eighth position in the qualification round, which allowed him to advance to the finals. In contrast, fellow shooters Kainan Chenai and Ahwar Rizvi fell short, finishing in 16th and 32nd places with scores of 115 and 107 points, respectively.
Bharadwaj’s journey to the finals included a tense three-way shoot-off against Qatar’s Mohammed Al-Rumaihi and Kazakhstan’s Alisher Aisalbayeva for the final two spots. He triumphed in this nerve-wracking contest, ensuring his place in the medal round.
Unfortunately, the Indian men’s trap team, which included Bharadwaj, Kainan, and Ahwar, finished sixth overall with a total score of 339, missing out on a team medal.
Earlier in the competition, the women’s trap team, consisting of Neeru Dhanda, Ashima Ahlawat, and Manisha Kheer, secured a silver medal in their event. This achievement brought India’s total medal count in shooting to 13. The trio scored a combined 328 points after three days of qualification rounds, successfully overcoming a challenge from Kuwait. China clinched the gold with a score of 346, while Kuwait took bronze with 325 points.
Neeru also qualified for the individual finals after tying for the top spot in the qualification round with a score of 118. However, Ashima and Manisha, who scored 106 and 104 points respectively, did not advance, finishing in 16th and 23rd places.
To date, India has garnered a total of 46 medals at the Games, including four golds, 21 silvers, and 21 bronzes, with the sole gold in shooting coming from the mixed 10-meter air pistol event won by Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh.
