Nagoya, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : Sunil Kumar etched his name in history on September 30, 2026, by winning a bronze medal in the men’s 87-kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling event at the Asian Games held in Nagoya. He triumphed over the Philippines’ Calum Johnston Roberts with a decisive 9-0 victory, showcasing his technical superiority.
This marks the second consecutive bronze medal for the 27-year-old wrestler at the Asian Games, making him the first Indian to win two medals in Greco-Roman wrestling at this prestigious event. Sunil previously secured a bronze in the same category at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
Returning to the podium, Sunil needed just one round to claim victory at the Inae Sports Center. He quickly established control in the match, scoring four points by pinning Roberts twice within the opening moves. An additional point was awarded due to Roberts’ inactivity, giving Sunil an early 5-0 lead just 90 seconds into the bout.
Demonstrating relentless aggression, Sunil capitalized on another passive position, bringing his score to 7-0 as Roberts struggled to respond to the Indian wrestler’s continuous attacks.
The match concluded shortly after, with Sunil executing another scoring move to secure two more points. He reached the nine-point margin required for technical superiority, culminating in a spectacular victory.
This bronze medal adds another chapter to Sunil’s impressive career, which already includes six Asian Championship medals. He has now become the first Indian to win multiple Greco-Roman medals at the continental games.
Sunil’s recent success continues to highlight India’s presence in the Greco-Roman wrestling medal tally. Following his outstanding performance, he joins the ranks of Indian athletes who have achieved success at the Asian Games.
