Nagoya, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : Sumit Nagal from India secured his spot in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles event at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya on Wednesday. He achieved this by defeating Uzbekistan’s Sergei Fomin in straight sets, with a score of 6-3, 6-2. This victory showcased Nagal’s composed play, allowing him to capitalize on opportunities without needing a decisive set.
Nagal, who is seeded seventh in the tournament, will face a tough challenge in the quarterfinals against China’s third-seeded player, Wu Yibing. Wu, currently ranked 111th in the world, has previously defeated Nagal in their only encounter.
In the earlier rounds, Nagal advanced to the third round by overpowering South Korea’s Seongchan Hong with a score of 6-4, 6-0. Their match was interrupted due to bad weather, with Nagal leading 3-2 in the first set before it resumed the following day. Upon resumption, Hong initially took the lead, winning eight consecutive points to go up 4-3. However, Nagal made a strong comeback, winning nine games in a row to secure victory in straight sets.
In contrast, Suresh’s journey ended in the third round after he lost to Taiwan’s sixth-seeded player, Chun-Hsin Tseng, with scores of 3-6, 4-6. Suresh had previously reached this round by defeating Indonesia’s Gunawan Trismuwantoro in a hard-fought match, winning 7-5, 7-6 (2). This marked his debut match at the Asian Games.
