Mumbai, May 7: The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is buzzing with discussions about actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay. Having made a significant mark in the film industry, Vijay’s entry into politics has already made waves, with his party, Tamilga Vetrikazhagam (TVK), emerging as the largest party in the state. Although the party is slightly short of a majority, Vijay’s political success is viewed as a remarkable achievement.
In a recent conversation, renowned author Shobha De shared her thoughts on Vijay’s political journey. She emphasized that despite being new to politics, everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves in a democracy.
Shobha De stated, “Vijay is a fresh face in politics. He may lack extensive political experience, yet he has achieved significant victories. He has garnered substantial support from the youth, particularly Gen-Z voters, which has propelled his party to a strong position in the elections. Vijay has carved out a unique identity among the youth, who see him as a new option.”
She further remarked, “Every individual entering politics starts as a novice, and experience grows over time. Therefore, it is unfair to judge Vijay solely based on his lack of experience.”
Highlighting the essence of democracy, she said, “In a democratic system, everyone is given an opportunity. The public has extended that opportunity to Vijay. Now, people should exercise patience and observe what he accomplishes and his vision for the state. Dismissing someone at the outset is not appropriate, as newcomers often bring significant change to politics.”
Shobha De also discussed the longstanding relationship between Tamil Nadu’s politics and the film industry. She noted, “It is not new for film stars to enter politics in Tamil Nadu. Many prominent leaders in the state have previously been popular faces in films. The people of Tamil Nadu have always shown immense affection for their film stars, which is why many actors have succeeded in politics. Vijay is now the next big name in this tradition.”
Citing the example of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, she said, “When Jayalalithaa entered politics, she also lacked substantial political experience. However, she later became one of the most powerful and beloved Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu. If she could prove herself, then Vijay deserves the same opportunity.”
It is noteworthy that Tamilga Vetrikazhagam (TVK) has secured 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, making it the largest party. However, to form a government, 118 seats are needed, placing the party just short of a majority.
