Shekhar Kapur Explores the Heart-Mind Connection in Love and Emotions

Mumbai, June 7: Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur recently took to social media to delve into the complexities of human emotions such as joy, sorrow, love, hope, and despair. He posed intriguing questions about the origins of these feelings and the roles different organs play in regulating them.

In a post on Instagram, Kapur shared a thought-provoking image and wrote, “Often, people say their heart is filled with love, or that their heart is racing with joy, or that someone has broken their heart. These are not just colloquial expressions; they represent experiences that nearly everyone goes through. If someone has never felt these emotions, they may not have truly lived.”

He further questioned, “When a person falls in love, does their heart start racing first, followed by a dopamine response in the brain? Or does the brain signal the heart that the person is in love, leading to an increased heartbeat?”

Kapur noted that scientific research suggests a deeper connection between the heart and the mind than commonly understood. Through the vagus nerve, numerous messages are transmitted from the heart to the brain. Interestingly, the heart may send just as many, if not more, messages to the brain than vice versa. Therefore, it may be inaccurate to regard the heart merely as a blood-pumping organ.

He emphasized, “The heart is a crucial part of our emotional intelligence. Regardless of future scientific conclusions, my personal experience tells me that sometimes the heart feels something before the mind can comprehend it.”

Kapur’s post has garnered significant attention on social media.

On the professional front, he is currently working on his much-anticipated film “Masoom: The New Generation,” which will feature his daughter, Kaveri Tapoor.
