Severe Heatwave Sweeps Across India, Red Alert Issued for Several Regions

Mumbai, May 21: A severe heatwave is gripping India, prompting authorities to issue warnings for the public. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised citizens to take precautions against the extreme heat.

IMD scientist Mohammad Danish noted that western winds are causing rising temperatures in Uttar Pradesh. The state has recorded some of the highest temperatures in the country over the past four days. A red alert has been issued for the Prayagraj and Agra divisions, while a yellow alert is in place for Lucknow. This red alert will remain for the next three days, followed by an orange alert.

Danish reported that maximum temperatures in many areas of Uttar Pradesh are hovering between 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. The most intense heat occurs between 11 AM and 4 PM. Residents are urged to minimize outdoor activities. If venturing outside is unavoidable, they should cover their heads and carry water bottles, ensuring they stay hydrated.

In Maharashtra, IMD Director Bikram Singh stated that a red alert has been issued for the Vidarbha region for today and tomorrow due to the heatwave. He mentioned that certain districts, including Amaravati and its neighboring areas, are under red alert, while others have been placed on orange alert. Residents are advised to remain vigilant.

Surinder Paul, Director of IMD Chandigarh, indicated that weather changes in Jammu and Kashmir may provide some relief from the heat in parts of Punjab and Haryana over the next two days. However, the heatwave conditions will persist. Some districts, such as Gurdaspur and Amritsar, may experience a slight drop in temperatures, but the heatwave will continue in most of Punjab, where temperatures have reached 45 degrees Celsius.
