New Delhi, April 14: A young boy from Gopalganj, Bihar, has captured hearts with his remarkable bowling in his IPL debut match. Despite facing financial hardships and a lack of resources, this fast bowler made a significant impact. His mother sold her jewelry to buy him cricket shoes, enabling him to sprint down the 22-yard pitch and astonish batsmen. Under the weight of expectations, Sakib Hussain did not falter; instead, he emerged as a player the world of cricket is eager to learn about.
Sakib’s father was a farmer, which meant financial struggles were a constant in their lives. They managed to get by, but dreams were often put on hold. Initially, Sakib aspired to join the Indian Army, training at a nearby military ground. However, his unique bowling talent shone through during cricket matches, leading friends to encourage him to pursue a career in the sport, with his father’s support. He began his journey with a tennis ball and gradually made a name for himself through his bowling skills.
The path to becoming a cricketer was not easy. When he transitioned to using a leather ball, he realized he needed good shoes. Witnessing her son’s dedication and passion for cricket, his mother sold her jewelry to buy him spikes. Irfan Pathan revealed in a conversation with ‘JioStar’ that Sakib’s mother made this sacrifice to ensure her son had the right equipment. Sakib honored her trust with relentless hard work.
He made his first-class cricket debut for Bihar in 2024 and has not looked back since, taking 16 wickets in six matches. In 13 T20 matches, he has claimed 14 wickets. Sakib first entered the IPL in 2023 as a net bowler for Chennai Super Kings, later being bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. However, he did not get the opportunity to showcase his talent in either year.
In the IPL 2026 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired Sakib Hussain for 3 million rupees. April 13, 2026, marked a historic date in Sakib’s cricket career. The ‘Son of Bihar’ finally received the chance he had long sought. He seized the opportunity, taking four wickets for just 24 runs in a four-over spell against Rajasthan Royals.
Sakib’s bowling displayed both speed and variety. His slow balls, alongside his fast deliveries, troubled batsmen throughout his debut match. If he continues to perform at this level throughout the IPL 2026 season, he could soon don the Indian national team jersey in the coming years.
