Severe Heatwave Hits Rajasthan, Temperatures Soar to 47 Degrees in Sri Ganganagar

Jaipur, May 27: A severe heatwave continues to grip Rajasthan, with Sri Ganganagar recording a staggering maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius in the last 24 hours, according to the Meteorological Department.

In Kota, the lowest minimum temperature was noted at 33.6 degrees Celsius, while Sirohi experienced a cooler minimum of 22.8 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Jaipur has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for extreme heat and warm nights over the next two to three days.

The department predicts that the intense heatwave conditions are likely to persist across large parts of the state until May 28. During this period, maximum temperatures are expected to range between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius in most districts. Certain areas in Bikaner, Kota, and Shekhawati divisions could see temperatures rise even higher, reaching between 46 and 47 degrees Celsius.

Radheshyam Sharma, director of IMD Jaipur, indicated that the most severe conditions are expected in the bordering areas of western Rajasthan, where temperatures could approach 48 degrees Celsius on May 27 and 28.

He also warned of warm nights, which may increase heat stress and discomfort, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. However, relief from the extreme heat is anticipated due to the influence of a new ‘Western Disturbance.’

The IMD forecasts that rainfall may begin in some parts of Rajasthan starting May 28.

The impact of this weather system is expected to intensify between May 29 and 31, bringing strong dust storms, winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kilometers per hour, and potential rainfall in several regions. Areas likely to be affected include Jaipur, Bharatpur, Kota, Ajmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner.

According to the IMD, the combined effects of thunderstorms and rain are expected to lower temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius starting May 29, providing significant relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions.

The weather department has advised citizens to take necessary precautions against the extreme heat and remain vigilant about rapidly changing weather conditions, including dust storms and strong winds.
