Kolkata, June 18: Police have arrested seven additional individuals in connection with the attack on the Falta police station in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. This incident was reportedly led by Jahangir Khan’s wife, Regina Bibi, who remains at large.
With these new arrests, the total number of detainees in this case has risen to 15. Previously, eight other suspects were apprehended over the last two days.
According to police sources, additional charges under the Arms Act of 1959 and the Explosives Act of 1884 have been filed against the fugitive Regina Bibi. Authorities allege that she played a pivotal role in orchestrating the attack on the Falta police station and the attempt to free Jahangir Khan.
On June 16, a crowd of Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters, led by Regina Bibi, attempted to storm the Falta police station to rescue Jahangir Khan. However, state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel intervened, dispersing the crowd with a baton charge and thwarting their efforts.
Investigations and interrogations of the arrested suspects revealed that the attack was planned the day before, on Monday, at a secret location. Regina Bibi chaired this meeting, where it was decided that supporters would gather about three kilometers from the police station and launch a coordinated assault to free Jahangir Khan.
Jahangir Khan, who was a candidate for the TMC in the recently concluded assembly elections, has long been considered a significant leader in the area.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Falta and, addressing a public event, instructed the Diamond Harbour district police to take stringent action against those involved in the attack under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The Chief Minister also directed the police to seize the assets of the attackers and initiate the process for their auction.
