Guwahati, April 6: The Congress party faced a significant setback just before the election campaign concluded. Senior leader Surya Kant Sarkar resigned from the party on Monday while AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge was addressing a rally in the Cachar district.
Surya Kant Sarkar had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Silchar seat on a Congress ticket. He has resigned from the party’s primary membership, expressing deep dissatisfaction with the internal workings and leadership of the party in the state.
In his resignation letter to the Congress President, Sarkar stated he was leaving with a “heavy heart.” He accused the party of ignoring repeated attempts to raise organizational issues. Despite his “integrity and unwavering commitment,” he felt that the leadership failed to address the problems.
Sarkar also expressed disappointment over the lack of accountability among certain officials, claiming that his concerns were not given due importance. He hinted at discrimination, stating that at times it seemed his issues were overlooked due to his background as a member of a scheduled community.
Questioning the functioning of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Sarkar alleged that especially in the Barak Valley, organizational appointments and crucial decisions were influenced by factors other than merit and grassroots contributions.
In light of these circumstances, Sarkar mentioned that it was becoming increasingly difficult to remain associated with the party. He thanked his supporters and voters, stating that their trust and encouragement had been his greatest strength.
