Samsung Initiates Development of Exynos 2800 for Galaxy S28

Mumbai, March 28: Samsung has reportedly begun early work on the Exynos 2800, the processor set to power the Galaxy S28 lineup in 2028. Although it’s still in the initial stages, the company’s direction is becoming clearer.

A report from Korea indicates that Samsung aims to finalize the design of the Exynos 2800, codenamed Vanguard, by 2026. Following this, the design will be handed over to Samsung’s foundry division for production. The chip is expected to be manufactured using the company’s third-generation 2nm process, known as SF2P+.

Previously, Samsung had plans to transition more aggressively to a 1.4nm process around 2027. However, this is no longer a priority. The current focus is on enhancing yields and ensuring process stability before advancing further. The 1.4nm node is now anticipated to debut later, possibly around 2029.

This shift is not unexpected. The challenge of reducing chip sizes each year is increasing, and the benefits are not always as clear-cut as they once were. Samsung appears to be prioritizing a closer collaboration between design and manufacturing rather than merely pursuing smaller specifications.

The upcoming Exynos 2700, also expected to utilize a 2nm process, is reportedly progressing well. This likely boosts Samsung’s confidence in their current approach.

For Samsung, this endeavor goes beyond just achieving a new manufacturing node. Previous Exynos chips have struggled to compete with Snapdragon in terms of efficiency and heat management. By concentrating on stability and optimization, Samsung could potentially close that gap.

While details regarding the CPU or GPU for the Exynos 2800 are still unavailable, this is not surprising given the timeline. If all goes according to plan, the Galaxy S28 may benefit from a more refined and balanced chip compared to its predecessors.
