Roop Kumar Rathod: The Singer Redefining Patriotism and Romance in Indian Music

Mumbai, June 9: In the world of Hindi film music, some voices defy categorization. One such voice is that of Roop Kumar Rathod. Throughout his career, he has sung songs that have brought tears to listeners’ eyes and filled hearts with love. He has beautifully expressed both patriotism and romance, making him one of the few artists to carve a unique identity in both genres.

Roop Kumar Rathod was born on June 10 in Mumbai. His father, Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod, was a renowned artist in Hindustani classical music. Growing up in a musical environment naturally drew Roop Kumar towards music at an early age. He began his journey by playing the tabla, collaborating with various ghazal singers, and gradually establishing his presence in the music industry.

His film career took off in the 1990s. Initially, he lent his voice to several films, but it was the song “Sandeshe Aate Hain” from the film ‘Border’ that brought him widespread recognition. He captured the emotions of soldiers so simply that this song remains one of the most popular patriotic anthems today. The film also featured the beloved track “To Chaluun,” which resonated with audiences.

Roop Kumar Rathod has never confined himself to a single genre. While he showcased patriotism through songs like “Sandeshe Aate Hain,” “Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye,” “Khush Rehna,” and “Kandhon Se Milte Hain Kandhe,” he also made romantic songs special with his voice. His most celebrated romantic track, “Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai,” has won the hearts of millions.

Other notable songs such as “Maula Mere Maula,” “Tere Liye,” “Dil Ko Tumse Pyaar Hua,” and “O Saiyaan” have further popularized his voice across households.

Roop Kumar has sung not only in Hindi but also in Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Assamese, Odia, Nepali, Bhojpuri, and Kannada, contributing his voice to over a thousand songs.

In addition to singing, he has explored music direction. Alongside his wife, Sonalri Rathod, he has performed numerous ghazal and Sufi shows.

His talent has been recognized on various platforms. For his contributions to Indian music, he was awarded the Lokmat Sur Jyotsna National Music Award in 2021, where he also received a special ‘Icon’ honor.
