Mumbai, September 1: Partho Sen Gupta is a notable figure in the Hindi film industry, recognized for bringing Indian cinema to international platforms. Born on September 2, 1965, in Mumbai, he is a film director, producer, and screenwriter.
After completing his early education, Partho pursued a postgraduate degree in film direction from the prestigious La Fémis film school in Paris. He returned to India and began his career in the film industry at the young age of 17, working as a trainee in the art department of Bollywood studios. During this time, he collaborated with renowned art director Bijon Dasgupta on major films and TV series, including “Sagar” and “Mr. India.”
After a few years as a trainee art director, he advanced to the role of assistant art director. In 1988, he worked as the art director/production designer on his first film, “Main Jinda Hoon,” directed by Sudhir Mishra.
Partho later established his own design studio, contributing to numerous advertisements and art films. His exceptional set designs earned him the Best Art Director award in 1989.
His debut feature film, “Hawa Aane De,” premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Film award at the Durban International Film Festival, also receiving recognition for the BBC Audience Award.
“Sunrise,” his second feature film, premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and was celebrated at various international festivals, including Tribeca, Sitges, BFI London, and Munich. It won Best Film and Best Cinematography at the 2015 Durban International Film Festival.
In 2019, Partho released his third feature film, “Slum,” which was shot in Australia. The film had its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival’s official selection competition and was also featured at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and the Berlin Co-Production Market.
Additionally, Partho Sen Gupta has produced and directed several other short films and feature films. He currently resides in Sydney.
