Chandigarh, April 18: Former Indian cricket captain and star batsman Rohit Sharma has inaugurated his second cricket academy in Punjab, located in Mohali. This follows the successful launch of his first academy in Batala, near Amritsar, in 2017.
Rohit’s brother, Vinay Sharma, shared insights with a news agency about the academy’s mission to provide world-class coaching to young players. He stated, “If we look at our first academy, it has successfully completed nearly eight years since its inception in 2017. This is our second cricket academy in Punjab, with the first one situated in Batala. From the beginning, our focus has been on delivering world-class coaching. When we played cricket, such facilities were not available. We grew up playing on basic grounds. There was no clear answer for parents asking where to send their children for proper training.”
Vinay also highlighted that Rohit had set specific conditions before starting the academy. He mentioned, “Rohit Sharma insisted that certain criteria must be met before launching the academy. According to him, there should be a good ground, at least 60 percent grass coverage, and a high-quality pitch for proper practice. Rohit stated that if these points were fulfilled, he would lend his name to the academy. This is how our academy came into existence.”
Currently, Rohit Sharma is participating in IPL 2026, playing for the Mumbai Indians. However, he faced a hamstring injury during a match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), which forced him to leave the field. He was also absent from the playing eleven in the recent match against the Punjab Kings. Hardik Pandya mentioned that Rohit may need some time to fully recover from his injury and might not be part of the team for the upcoming matches.
