New Delhi, April 18: Luke Wood, a fast bowler playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), believes that the league’s standard is closest to that of international cricket. The Gujarat Titans player expressed that participating in the IPL has been a childhood dream for him. Wood was acquired by the Gujarat Titans for ₹7.5 million during the auction.
In an interview, Wood stated that playing for England is the highest honor for him, but competing in the IPL holds a special significance as well. He noted that he has participated in several T20 leagues worldwide, but the experience in the IPL is unparalleled. The quality of players, pitches, and the level of competition here surpasses that of other leagues.
Wood acknowledged that many young players perform exceptionally well in the IPL, often surprising everyone with their skills. He specifically mentioned young fast bowler Ashok Sharma, praising him as a remarkable talent. Reflecting on his experience with the Gujarat Titans, Wood shared that the team environment is very welcoming. He felt a sense of belonging as soon as he joined the team. The franchise takes excellent care of its players, managing everything in a professional manner, which allows players to feel comfortable both on and off the field.
Discussing his game, Wood highlighted that swinging the new ball is his greatest strength. He has been honing this skill since childhood, making it a habit. Over the past decade, he has worked to enhance his bowling technique, particularly focusing on his inswing yorker.
Wood mentioned that Gujarat Titans’ head coach Ashish Nehra has been instrumental in helping him understand Indian pitches. He admitted that he hasn’t played much cricket on Indian soil and is adjusting to the conditions. Regarding his bowling strategy during power plays, Wood explained that plans change based on each match and pitch. He cited examples of left-arm fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Mitchell Starc, who often bowl fuller lengths at the start to take advantage of swing.
